Meet Updater: Diane Um, Business Intern

Introducing Diane, our wonderful summer intern! We caught up with Diane to learn more about her internship at Updater (and just how she’s going to survive living 3,000 miles away from the Updater team).

Where are you from?

I was born in South Korea, but grew up in the Silicon Valley (ironically, I came all the way to New York to work for a tech start-up!). I currently attend the University of Southern California in Los Angeles as an economics and public policy double-major.

What’s something you’ll miss about working in New York?

As an urban planning nerd, I have to say the public transit system. I still remember the moment that I bought my monthly Metro pass, and how I felt totally invincible! From sweating profusely on the subway platform, to almost getting knocked over during impromptu hip hop routines, I’ve treasured every bit of my transit experience here.

What’s your favorite part about working at Updater?

Updater is the perfect hands-on learning environment. By my first week, I was already at a conference with the marketing team, helping clients understand some of our new features. From networking with corporate partners, to drafting original content, the team fully trusts me to put forth high quality work. As an intern, that level of trust is an unexpected blessing and an invitation for immense growth.

What are your key takeaways from the internship?

I’ve realized how important it is for team members to challenge one another toward a shared vision. Throughout my time here, I was often assigned tasks that I had no clue how to even start. I had to learn and adapt quickly. At first, it was daunting, but now I’m excited whenever I’m invited into uncharted territory – it’s an opportunity to help build the foundation for future success.

How would you describe the team at Updater?

Hard-working, innovative, encouraging, intelligent, hilarious… and donut-loving.

What’s your favorite Updater feature?

I love the convenience and the simplicity of the Updater dashboard. It helps our clients help their clients better. Less stress for everyone!

Favorite food?

Oh, that’s a tough one. I recently discovered brussel sprouts. I know a lot of people hate them, but come on! You have to try them roasted with some olive oil and salt.

Do you have any daily rituals?

Yes, I do. And it involves blasting “All I Do is Win” by DJ Khaled every morning.

What’s the last thing that made you laugh until you cried?

My mom and I are both terrified of roller coasters. Last week, she told me a story about one time when she went on one of those swinging Viking boat rides and was so scared that she grabbed onto and consequently ripped the jacket off the man sitting next to her. Turns out, he was wearing an army coat! If you know how durable that material is… I’m pretty impressed.
