Meet Updater: Tom Hannon, Controller
Meet Tom Hannon, Controller for Updater's finance and accounting team. Tom joined us from England by way of Texas and gives us the distinct pleasure of hearing the word “y’all” pronounced with an English accent. He’s often referred to as the funniest person in the office and can make anyone smile. We sat down with Tom to find out more about him, and to enjoy a bit of his wit.
Where did you grow up?
Yorkshire, in the North of England, it's where the puddings come from. There's beautiful countryside once you get outside of the big cities in England. In fact, Yorkshire has some of the most beautiful scenery — you should go visit and tell them Tom sent you.
What are two personal tidbits about you?
I'm the world's slowest eater, period. I'm also a minimalist.
How many times have you moved?
Ugh, too many to count. I've lived on two continents and in three countries — England, Holland, and now the United States. As an adult, I don't think I've lived in the same apartment for more than two years.
Do you have a moving horror story?
When I first moved to New York from Houston I was without furniture for ten months. When I was eventually reunited with it, I don't think I left the couch for a week. It felt so good to be living like a normal person again.
What's your best piece of moving advice?
It’s the same with everything in life: If in doubt, hire the professionals.
What's your favorite thing about working at Updater?
It's a cliché, but I'm going to say the people. I love the fact that we’re all swimming in the same direction. We work hard and get it done, but I've never experienced this much enjoyment working in an office environment. The Updater team is a great bunch of people. Did I mention we are hiring? I like telling people what we do. You always get the response, “If only I had that the last time I moved!” It's a great business that’s scaling fast.
It's the zombie apocalypse. Where do you hide?
No way, if that ever occurs I'm going out full Russel Crowe Gladiator style. If I can take one or two of them with me I'll be the one at the front shouting, “Are you not entertained?”
What's your favorite quote?
“Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.” — Roald Dahl
In the era that we currently live, everything is under such constant scrutiny that I feel we often fail to enjoy life's simple pleasures. If you let a little magic into your life every now and again, I feel the world will always be a better place.
What's the first app you check in the morning?
The weather. I'm English and as a nation we like to complain about the weather. I feel like it’s my duty.
You have a time machine, but you can only make one trip. Where do you go?
I'd like to go to Woodstock in 1969. I would really like the actual Woodstock moment to be my Woodstock moment. I'm a bit free-spirited at times, and to have been there would have been cool.
What's your favorite Saturday Night Live skit?
I've got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell. Since I moved to NYC, back in 2015, I've been able to hang out on the SNL set a few times. Ha, saying that makes me really feel like a New Yorker.
