Meet Updater: Todd Stephan, VP of Engineering
We are pleased to introduce the Vice President of Engineering, Todd Stephan. Todd’s extensive background in technology and enthusiastic approach make him a natural fit with the Updater community. He also happens to be a frequent mover and understands the tribulations that come with moving. When Todd isn’t working to revolutionize the moving industry, you can find Todd invested in a good book, chocolate bar in hand.
We caught up with Todd to learn more about his moving strategies and what brought him to Updater.
Where did you grow up?
Los Angeles, CA.
How many times have you moved?
Seven horrible times.
Do you have a moving horror story?
When moving from Los Angeles to Chicago, my moving company called the day before my move-in date to inform me that my furniture (and car) would be arriving 6-8 weeks late. When I asked why they were telling me now, just hours before my move, they said they tried to contact me (which they hadn’t) and that the delay was due to the busy moving season (which they should’ve prepared for). So I immediately rented a minivan, bought a twin bed, some clothes, and a few cooking supplies. I lived in the empty house for almost seven weeks.
What are two personal tidbits about you?
I love animals but I have both asthma and allergies. If I look like I am having trouble breathing, please help!
I am a sucker for quotes and blurbs (yes, even the clichés).
What’s your favorite thing about working at Updater?
That’s easy. The people!
How did you come to work at Updater?
I know the pain of moving and I saw value in helping to make moving easy.
What’s your go-to afternoon sugar rush?
What’s the most interesting thing you have on your desk at the moment?
Other than the picture of my wife, of course, my Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. I can type forever and not have hand or wrist problems. After using this type of keyboard for 20 years, it’s almost impossible to type on a regular keyboard anymore.
What’s the best advice you've ever received?
Don’t Panic! Chances are, it won’t matter in two weeks.
In your opinion, what NYC borough is the best borough? Why?
Being relatively new to NYC, they all seem great to me.
What’s your favorite place you’ve traveled?
What three words describe you best?
Helper, learner, and curious.
What’s your favorite book?
I read constantly so it’s hard to pick just one. The one I have re-read the most is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
What’s your favorite quote?

If you were a food what would you be? Why?
Enchiladas. Why? Why not. They’re delicious!
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?
I was introduced to computers at nine years old. At the time I didn’t know I could get paid to play with them.
What four things can you not live without?
Three books and some way to express my talents.
You're about to move. What would you make sure to never do again?
Try to time everything down to the hour. Things always shift at the last moment and overplanning has caused too many problems.
Lunch is on us! What’s your favorite sandwich?
Yuck! I rarely eat sandwiches.
You have a million dollars and 24 hours to spend it. What do you buy?
I would pay off any of my family's debts so they can pursue their dreams.
What are two truths and a lie about you?
I have traveled at over 165 mph in my car, and 125 mph on my motorcycle, multiple times.
I started my first business at 14, and have since started three more businesses (and counting) over my career.
As a high school sophomore, I won second place out of all Los Angeles Unified School District students (several thousand entries) for the software I wrote.
