Meet Updater: Jon Wyant, Vice President of Property Management Sales
Meet Jon Wyant, Vice President of Multifamily Sales. Between his expert motorcycle repair skills, spending quality time with his five children, and conquering his fear of the subway, Jon is a busy guy. Luckily for us, he still finds time to be a sales expert who helps property management companies and their residents enjoy the Updater moving experience.
Where did you grow up?
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A Navy pilot or a doctor.
What are two personal tidbits about you?
- I have an amazing wife who is very successful in her profession of pharmaceutical sales (earned us a trip to Ireland last year). Between her and me we have five AMAZING kids. Yep, it’s a little crazy in our house at times.
- I also love a good pivot table and I’ve been known to create some amazing dashboards!
How many times have you moved?
About five times too many! Back in my single days, while in Atlanta, I probably moved every year. Come on, I had to take advantage of the latest "move-in" special that was being offered. It was only until later in my career when I realized that the total cost of moving ended up being more than the slight increase in monthly rent on the renewal. I did not make very good moving decisions. All potential apartment movers out there, use this wisdom.
Do you have a moving horror story?
Yes! Many years ago, while I was living in Atlanta, I was moving in with a few friends. On the day of move-in, after we had started putting our stuff into the apartment, one of my roommates brings in a large glass tank. I asked him, what goes in the glass tank? He responded, my two boa constrictor snakes. This was problematic for a couple reasons. First, I hate snakes. Second, I had a cat which he knew about. The last time I checked, boa constrictors and cats don't mix very well in a social environment.
What's your best piece of moving advice?
Plan on your move taking twice as long and costing more than your current budget!
You're about to move. What would you make sure to never do again?
Wait too long to start planning the move.
What's the largest item you've ever had to carry on the subway?
My nervousness and fear! I rode the subway for the first time last year while visiting Updater HQ in NYC. Even though I was in the good hands of my local colleagues, it was still a little nerve-racking.
How did you come to work at Updater?
Ash Bell, VP & Executive Director of Multifamily & University Housing at Updater approached me about joining something "wonderful.” Since we had worked together in the past, it was an easy decision. Also, meeting the entire staff during the hiring process made my decision even easier. We are a "work family," therefore it makes things even more enjoyable.
What's the first app you check in the morning?
What do you do to unwind?
I work on Motocross/Supercross bikes. My son started riding in late 2016. Since then, we have owned over 10 bikes, many of which were purchased not running at all. I’ve completely torn down two-stroke and four-stroke bikes to their frames and have had engines split apart while I was replacing bearings, cranks, pistons, etc. Some might say I have developed into an amateur mechanic. There is something soothing to me about fixing something mechanical and knowing it is in better condition than it was before I bought it. Not to mention, the bike can take you 20 feet into the air off a triple jump!
If you could travel to work every day on a vehicle without wheels (think: hovercraft, broom), what would you choose?
Teleportation device. I am a fast-paced person. So, what better way to travel than instantly!
What's your favorite fast food restaurant?
