Meet Updater: Jason Byck, Director of Platform Engineering
Introducing a new addition to the Updater family... Jason! In addition to an incredibly handsome pug, Jason also brings with him pearls of moving wisdom, an addiction to caffeine, and a moving tip we should all take to heart.
It's the zombie apocalypse. Where do you hide?
I would just do the opposite of whatever they do on The Walking Dead.
Where did you grow up?
Timmins, Ontario, Canada.
What's the largest item you've ever had to carry on the subway?
Do you have a moving horror story?
The worst experience I had happened in university, while moving into a second floor walk-up apartment. My roommate and I did the moving ourselves (bad idea!) and we somehow got our couch completely stuck in the narrow stairwell.
I still don’t know how we managed to do that, but it wouldn’t budge after an hour of trying to get it unstuck, and we were forced to tear it apart with a saw and hammer. We ended up getting the rest of our stuff moved in and living there for a year. The first thing we did was buy a new couch...
What's your best piece of moving advice?
Hire professional movers. They are much better at it than your friends.
What are 2 personal tidbits about you?
I once pitched a no-hitter in little league baseball. I was 11 years old and it was 6 innings, but still…
I hate ketchup.
How many times have you moved?
I’ve moved 10 times.
What's the best part about working on a small team?
Knowing everyone you work with (even though I'm still not there yet at Updater!).
What's the first app you check in the morning?
Usually Twitter, even though I never post any tweets.
You're about to move. What would you make sure to never do again?
Pack the night before.
What are 4 things you can't live without?
Coffee, americano, latte, and espresso.
I'm the Digital Content Manager at Updater, meaning I make things look and sound good. My content specialties are renters and homeowners insurance, cloud technology, and all things moving! I eat pizza every Friday and I never buy a new iPhone until mine breaks.
