Meet Updater: Daniel Weaver, VP of Carrier Development for Updater’s Insurance Division
We’re pleased to introduce the VP of Carrier Development for Updater’s Insurance Division, Daniel Weaver. Daniel has been in the insurance industry for over a decade, working with top carriers across the United States. Daniel was most recently the VP of Carrier Relations at Goji, one of the largest privately-held online P&C insurance agencies.
As VP of Carrier Development, Daniel is in charge of establishing and maintaining relationships with all insurance carriers, as well as contract negotiations and spearheading strategic initiatives. Daniel’s business development expertise and strategic account management experience allow Updater to partner with some of the largest carriers — making transferring insurance a seamless process for the millions of Americans who move every year.
We sat down with Daniel to find out more about his experience and his thoughts on Updater’s place in the insurance industry.
How did you start your career in the insurance industry?
After moving to Boston, I met the CEO of Consumer United — now Goji — a large national P&C agency. He had a vision for helping the average family save hundreds of dollars a year by helping them shop for insurance and other products. It was 2008 and the economy was hurting. Saving hundreds of dollars meant a lot to the average family. At this point, the insurance marketplace was very opaque. No one had solved the problem of shopping for insurance. I found it exciting to work with some of the largest insurance carriers and to help hundreds of thousands of families save money while finding new insurance coverage.
What do you see as the biggest problem facing the insurance industry?
On the whole, the insurance industry still struggles with providing an exceptional customer experience in the shopping and purchase cycle. At Updater, our goal is to provide a better experience for those moving and shopping for insurance. No one thinks about needing new insurance when they move. People are stressed, can't find their paperwork, and often don't remember their insurance company's name.
We partner with insurance companies to help connect the dots to retain their customers and acquire new customers who are in the market for insurance.
What is a common misconception about the insurance industry?
The ethos of the InsureTech community is that carriers are slow and monolithic. The truth is that insurance companies are methodical. The market is very dynamic and they work to make incremental improvements, day by day to improve results. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
How did you come to work for Updater?
I received a text from an insurance industry friend saying he just talked to the Head of Updater’s Insurance Division. He was being pitched on the business and my friend said, "You're not trying to hire me. You're trying to hire Daniel Weaver." A handful of face-to-face meetings and the rest of the team and I was sold.
What gets you most excited about Updater’s Insurance Division?
The insurance marketplace is heavily regulated. This ultimately gets felt by the end consumer through a clunky experience. I get excited about removing friction in the ecosystem by connecting customers and carriers. At Updater, we have a huge opportunity to improve the experience for hundreds of thousands of users each month.
