Meet Updater: Angela Medina, Product Designer

When Product Designer Angela Medina isn’t improving Updater's User Experience, you can find her playing with her pet cat or eating a Banh Mi sandwich. Read on to learn more about Angela and why she loves working at Updater!

Where did you grow up?

Bogotá, Colombia.

How many times have you moved?

Do you have a moving horror story?

I moved from Miami to San Francisco with my boyfriend in a car. There wasn’t really anything horrifying about it — it was actually a small move. We had sold absolutely everything in order to start fresh in San Francisco. This meant that most of our most valuables were with us in the car. That was pretty scary at first. We were extra careful about the places we would park when we were grabbing food, stopping at hotels, or sightseeing.

It turned out to be a fun road trip. We started in Miami, and stopped in New Orleans, Austin, Tucson, San Diego, and Los Angeles. In five days, we made it to San Francisco. It was an unforgettable experience and I would totally do it again!

What are two personal tidbits about you?

  1. I recently co-founded the Latinas in Tech NYC chapter. The organization started in Silicon Valley four years ago and has chapters in multiple cities, now including New York City! The mission is to create a space for Latinas to connect, support each other, and feel empowered across the technology sector.

  2. I never really liked cats. Then I got a cat as a birthday gift! It turned out to be the best birthday gift ever.

How did you come to work at Updater?

Through a recruiting platform called Vettery.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Updater?

Having pups in the office is an amazing perk and my team is awesome. Plus, on a more serious note, the problem we’re trying solve is a real one. It’s definitely the most exciting thing about working at Updater!

What’s the best part about working on a small team?

We move really fast. There aren’t a ton of management layers which makes us able to get a ton done very quickly.

What’s your go-to afternoon sugar rush?

I love Skittles or Sour Patch Kids.

What’s your favorite place you’ve traveled?

Vietnam. I’m not sure if it’s because it was the first Asian country I visited, but Vietnam holds a very special place in my heart. The food is incredible, the people are extremely friendly and humble, and the whole country is very picturesque.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?

An actress and singer, because I always thought I could sing and I loved to do impressions of people.

Have you ever gotten really lost? What happened?

Last year, I went on a hike with a few girlfriends to Joshua Tree Park for my bachelorette celebration. We started on the trail, but wandered off as we got excited about taking pictures. All of the sudden, everything looked exactly the same and it started to get dark. One of my friends started to freak out until we finally saw people and got back on the trail. We were lost for at least 10 minutes but it felt like hours.

Lunch is on us! What’s your dream sandwich?

I LOVE Banh Mi sandwiches. My dream sandwich has lemongrass pork and sliced apples, pickled carrots, and lots of cilantro on a fresh baguette.

What’s the largest item you’ve ever had to carry on the subway?

Cari, my friend’s chocolate lab who weighs about 80 lbs! I didn't actually carry her but it was quite the adventure since it was her first time riding the subway.
