Moving somewhere in New Mexico? Before you cruise around the new neighborhood, add updating the New Mexico DMV change of address form to your moving to-do list. In some states, you have less than 30 days to update your driving records and/or vehicle registration with the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV), so now’s the time to act!

Will the state of New Mexico issue me a new driver’s license or ID card?

No. Once you’ve submitted a New Mexico DMV change of address request, you must visit an MVD office, or request a license replacement online.

What will I need when I notify the DMV?

  • Your completed Change of Address Request Form
  • Your driver’s license/ID number
  • Your date of birth
  • Your new address
  • $18.00 for a four-year license or $34.00 for an eight-year license

You can get a new driver’s license at any New Mexico MVD Office.

What will I need?

When do I need to complete my driver’s license change of address?

After becoming a resident, you have 60 days to apply for a New Mexico driver’s license.

Do I need to take a driving test?

Nope! But you will be required to pass a vision test.

Is there a fee?

Yes. You will be charged a one-time $15.00 fee for a DWI records check, bringing your total to $33.00 for a four-year license or $49.00 for an eight-year license.

Where can I register my vehicle?

You’ll need to visit a New Mexico MVD Office.

What will I need?

Depending on what type of vehicle you are registering, there are various documents you will need to bring. Please see the MVD Register Your Vehicle page for more information.

When do I need to register my vehicle?

You need to register your vehicle within 30 days of becoming a New Mexico resident.

Is there a fee?

Yes. The registration fee for passenger vehicles is based on the weight and model year of the vehicle. Registration fees range from $27.00 to $62.00 for a one-year registration or $54.00 to $124.00 for a two-year registration.

Is an emission test required?

You will only be required to have an emission test if your new residency is in Bernalillo County, but you will need a VIN Inspection when you move to New Mexico.

Do I need to notify the state of New Mexico?

No. When you receive a license from the state you’re moving to, New Mexico will automatically cancel your driver’s license.
