Particularly if you’re living in a pricey neighborhood, chances are that you traded leg room for 250 precious square feet to call your own. While you joke with your roommates that you live like sardines in your tiny apartment, it’s not so funny when all of your closets are literally stuffed to the gills with everything that wouldn’t fit on the bookshelf.
While we can’t promise you a larger apartment, these tiny apartment hacks will help you reclaim a bit more legroom in the dollhouse you affectionately call home.
STORAGE FOR YOUR HANGING CLOTHING
Enter tiny apartment complaint #1: Your apartment has little to no closets. While storing your clothing in under the bed storage or in your dresser is a definite option, you’ll still want to hang up larger items like jackets, dresses, or suits on a vertical rack. As a space-saving workaround, purchase a garment rack so larger clothing items have a bit more breathing room.
If you invest in an industrial grade garment rack, it should be able to support between fifty and eighty hangers at the minimum. The best part? Thrift stores and even department stores often have extra garment racks on hand, which you may be able to take for free.
CHOOSE FURNITURE WISELY
There’s no way getting around it: Under the bed storage is a huge space-saver, particularly if your apartment is short on shelves, closets, cabinets, and drawers. While you love the look of the low-slung bed frame, it’s simply not the most space-efficient option.
If you forego furniture that has built in storage, make sure to choose furniture that has a lot of breathing room under the bed so you can easily slide in storage containers.
CHECK THE BACK OF THE DOOR
Hang racks on the back of the door to maximize storage space. For example, hang a spice rack on the back of the pantry door, a cleaning supplies rack on the cabinet door under the bathroom sink, or a shoe rack to the back of your closet door.
HANG POTS AND PANS
No need to stack all your cooking pots, babushka style, in your one kitchen cabinet. Rescue a bit of kitchen storage space by hanging your frying pan, pots and pans on kitchen hanging racks.
MAGNETIZE YOUR UTENSILS
Trade the knife butcher block for a magnetic strip that you can hang behind the sink. It’ll house your entire knife collection and any other metal cutlery that would otherwise fit in a drawer.
GET CREATIVE WITH COUNTER SPACE
If you and your roommates are always fighting to claim the twelve square inches of counter space, you know it’s time to look into alternatives. Reclaim a bit of counter space by purchasing an oversized cutting board that will fit on top of your stove top or sink. Lie it down on top of the stove top for additional surface space.
DISPLAY YOUR TRINKETS WITH CORNER SHELVES
In your 250 square foot apartment, it’s a sad reality that shelving units simply won’t fit without taking up half the living room floor. The bad news is that you often sacrifice your decorative storage to functional storage. The good news is that there’s an easy hack: Take full advantage of corner shelves to hold your decorative pots, picture frames, and any and all trinkets. Corner shelves are super easy to install and take advantage of a much underutilized area in your apartment.
PURGE WHAT YOU DON’T NEED
Remember, it’s always healthy to do a quick review of everything that’s in your apartment and purge what you really don’t need. Do you really need your butterfly collection from the third grade? What about all of those expired spices that you don’t use that are sitting in the kitchen cabinet? Conducting a regular review of your stuff should help you pare down what you have and save a bit more on storage space.
With a bit of out of the box thinking, you’ll open up more space and find a few undiscovered nooks in your apartment (yes, that’s possible!). The key here? Target walls, vertical spaces, and corners for a few more space-friendly hacks.
