Unless you qualify for reciprocity, you must get a Washington D.C. driver's license.

The bad news: you'll need to visit a Washington D.C. DMV service center. We hate to say it, but services are not available online.

If your out-of-state license has been expired for 90 days or more, you must take a road test and a written test. Otherwise, plan on taking just a vision test.

You must cancel or forfeit your vehicle registration and tags once you've registered the vehicle in your new state. Luckily, you can do this through an online portal. You can also mail your tags here:
