Meet Updater: Mary Beth Cook, Business Recruiter

When you’ve moved nearly 20 times, It’s safe to say you can provide some sound moving tips! We sat down with our Business Recruiter, Marybeth (also known as “MB”), to learn more about her moving experiences, how she came to work at Updater, and why she finds her role so rewarding.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Colleyville, Texas – a suburb of Dallas. I'm the only one in my family without an accent!

Do you have a moving horror story?

A little over two years ago I moved from a fairly large apartment on the Upper West Side to a smaller place in Brooklyn. I'm more in the "this feels like it's gonna work out fine" school of thought vs. the "maybe I should measure to make sure all this stuff will fit" one. Spoiler alert: it did not all fit. I remember standing in the only two square feet of clear floor space in the apartment at the end of the day after the movers left, surrounded by boxes, with literally no idea how to even begin unpacking. It all worked out fine in the end, but I learned a valuable lesson from the experience: embrace the tape measurer.

What’s your best piece of moving advice?

Simply – save yourself and leave moving to the professionals.

How many times have you moved?

Growing up, my family had a custom home building business. We would live in a house until it sold and then move to the next one. Then I moved every year of college. Then I moved to NYC, and I'm already on my 5th apartment here. I'd guess around 20 times total.

You're about to move. What would you make sure to never do again?

I’ll be sure to never, ever, leave all the packing to the last minute... as I have in the past.

What’s the largest item you’ve ever had to carry on the subway?

I have a confession to make. I spend WAY too much money on private transportation. If I can't carry it in a bag over my shoulder, I'm cabbing it.

What do you see as the biggest industry problem?

Moving is often such a daunting and impersonal experience, especially when you consider what a significant impact it has on a person's life. If only there was a solution that walks you through the process, makes you feel taken care of, and gives you peace of mind that you're not missing anything… (wink, wink).

What’s your favorite thing about working at Updater?

The people! Updater is comprised of such a genuine, fun, intelligent group of people who are passionate about what they do, but who don’t take themselves too seriously.

What’s your favorite Updater feature? Why?

It seems so simple, but it's the combination of update your accounts and the mail forwarding feature. I just moved a few months ago without using Updater, and I'm somehow still chasing around mail and packages that are going to my old address. I'm embarrassed to say I have the new tenants in my favorites list on my phone…

How did you come to work at Updater?

I left my last job with the intention of starting my own business and reached out to a friend who had done the same to have coffee and pick his brain. Over the course of the conversation, he mentioned that he was working with some amazing people who he thought I'd get along with at a company called Updater. "Just go have coffee with them," he said, "You'll make some new friends at the very least." Fast forward to today – I made some new friends, and found my new work home in the process. #winning

What’s the best part about working on a small team?

Working on a small team requires having a holistic understanding of the business and company goals, and how my role contributes to success. The ability to see tangible results of my work is so satisfying.

What motivates you to come to work every day?

I'm our Business Recruiter here at Updater, so my role involves finding awesome talent to join our growing team. It's incredibly rewarding to be a part of something as important as connecting people with jobs. I'm so grateful to play such an integral role in curating the culture of a company where people are happy and successful.
