Meet Updater: Kirk Gordon, Senior Services Engineer

Meet Updater’s Senior Services Engineer, Kirk Gordon. Kirk is an engineer on a mission to help solve any and all moving related problem we can throw at him. He also makes sure to save enough time to kick back and play a little Super Mario. On top of all that, he also rocks some pretty cool socks. Here’s a little more about Kirk and what makes him an awesome member of our team.

Where did you grow up?

Jamaica and NYC (mostly NYC).

What are two personal tidbits about you?

I love quirky socks and old-school video games like Tetris, Super Mario, and Super Mario Kart.

How many times have you moved?

Three.

Do you have a moving horror story?

When I was moving from Jersey City to Brooklyn, the freight elevator of the building I was moving into broke and we had to carry everything up the stairs. Three flights!

You’re about to move. What would you make sure to never do again?

Not hire professionals.

What’s your best piece of moving advice?

Toss out things you no longer use or need. Moving is a great time to declutter.

What’s the largest item you’ve ever had to carry on the subway?

An air conditioner, bad idea!

What’s your favorite thing about working at Updater?

The people — everyone’s great!

What’s the best part about working on a small team?

It’s easier to get to know everyone and build close relationships. It leads to increased productivity and quality results.

What motivates you to come to work every day?

In order: the people, interesting work, and the organization’s culture and core values.

Whom do you admire most as a business leader?

Jeff Bezos.

What’s your favorite quote?

“You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.”

-Bruce Lee.

What’s the first app you check in the morning?

My calendar.

You can only eat one food for the rest of your life. What is it?

This is a tough one but I would have to go with paella.

What do you do to unwind?

Music and a good IPA.

If you could travel to work every day on a vehicle without wheels (think: hovercraft, broom), what would you choose?

An aerocar like those in The Jetsons.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A pilot. As I got older, I realized I’m not a fan of heights. This would have been a terrible career decision.
