Meet Updater: Hannah Bildahl, Business Recruiter
Meet Hannah Bildahl, Business Recruiter and epic mover. We’re excited to have Hannah join us in our mission to help make moving simpler.
It’s our pleasure to introduce Hannah Bildahl, Business Recruiter and lover of all water-based activities. Hear Hannah’s favorite ways to spend a day out on the water, and how she survived a dreaded cross-country blizzard move. We’re happy she made it because we love having her on our team!
Where did you grow up?
Rowayton, CT and Bozeman, MT.
What’s your favorite way to spend the day?
I love spending time on the water. Whether it's sailing, paddle boarding, boating, or sitting on the beach. You name it, I'm there!
Do you have a moving horror story?
When I was a kid, my family moved from Connecticut to Big Sky, Montana. We left CT on November first, in beautiful fall weather. Two days into the drive, around North Dakota, we hit a full-blown blizzard. I’m talking closed highways and multiple feet of snow. Fargo weather!
Days later, we finally made it to Montana where it was still dumping snow. Upon arrival at our new house, my dad realized that the latch and lock on the moving truck were frozen shut and covered in inches of ice. Everything we owned, including our pots and pans, were frozen in the moving truck.
My sister and I spent over an hour running back and forth with pots — borrowed from new neighbors — of boiling water to melt the ice on the truck so we could unpack our belongings. The next time we moved it was in the summer.
How many times have you moved?
Over 15 times. I've lost count.
What's your best piece of moving advice?
If you’re working full-time while you're moving and your company allows it, take a few days off from work during the week to prepare. I really valued having a day or two to focus on the move and not having to worry about other things like answering emails, taking calls, etc. It’s a lot less stressful to go to IKEA on a Monday than on a busy Saturday.
You're about to move. What would you make sure to never do again?
I’ll never ask friends to help me move and then pay them with beer and pizza. Stuff will get broken, they won't show up, and you'll feel forever indebted to the friend of a friend who carried your box spring up four flights of stairs.
How did you come to work at Updater?
I heard about Updater a few years ago when I was looking into the NYC tech startup scene. Fast forward a few years, Updater came across my radar again through the recruiting tool Built in NYC. Now, I'm here!
What's your favorite Updater feature? Why?
Being able to forward your mail. I wish everyone knew how important and helpful this feature is. I've been getting mail at my apartment from previous tenants for the past three years. If only they had used Updater when they moved out of my apartment!
What motivates you to come to work every day?
The fact that I'm able to talk to people about how amazing working at Updater is while I help build our wonderful team.
What's the largest item you've ever had to carry on the subway?
I haven’t taken anything too large on the subway, besides excessive amounts of groceries. However, I once moved a queen-sized Casper mattress in an Uber. The driver was less than thrilled and it didn’t help my Uber rating.
It's the zombie apocalypse. Where do you hide?
The store, Cabelas. They have food, shelter, medical supplies, and lots of weapons. Also, if you go to one with a fish tank and run out of food, you can always go fishing!
Which actor/actress would play you in a movie about your life?
Jennifer Lawrence. Sometimes people tell me I look like her, so that's a win. She's also a badass!
Whom do you admire most as a business leader?
Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group.
What's your favorite quote?
“If you’re not the lead dog, the view never changes.”
What's the first app you check in the morning?
Technically, it's snoozing my alarm clock. Then, either my email or Instagram.
What do you do to unwind?
Sit on the beach with a good read, great friends, and a cocktail.
If you could travel to work every day on a vehicle without wheels (think: hovercraft, broom), what would you choose?
The Glass Elevator from Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
What's your favorite fast food restaurant?
Duchess. It’s a Connecticut thing.
What are four things you can't live without?
Water, wine, food, and sleep.
What's your favorite Saturday Night Live skit?
Any skit that has Amy Poehler playing Hillary Clinton.
