Updater and Move for Hunger Fight Hunger Together

Adam Lowy was born into the moving industry. A New Jersey native, Adam’s family has owned a moving company in New Jersey for nearly a century. And after years of seeing how much food is wasted when people move, Adam decided to make a change. Seven years ago he founded Move for Hunger, the industry nonprofit responsible for mobilizing the moving industry to reduce food waste and fight hunger across the country.

We spoke with Adam about Move for Hunger’s incredible progress in the last year, their unique process of collecting and distributing food, and fighting hunger this holiday season.

How Move for Hunger helps local communities

Rather than throw away pounds upon pounds of perfectly good food, Move for Hunger enlists professional moving companies and local food banks to collect and deliver it to people in need. How does it work? Moving companies collect food that would otherwise be thrown away when someone moves and deliver it to local food banks that partner with Move for Hunger. “No other nonprofit is capable of doing this, because we have a transportation and logistics network at our disposal — something we respect,” Adam says. “We appreciate that movers are donating their time and resources to make this possible.”

But it doesn’t end there. Move for Hunger is an organization that appeals to people at all levels of engagement — individuals, as well as businesses. “People want to do good, but they don’t know when or how,” Adam says. “But with us, most of the time, the food is staying local. Anyone can volunteer their time and provide food to their communities.”

Move for Hunger’s partnership with Updater

Updater is proud to partner with Move for Hunger to help transform the moving industry and raise funds to feed people in need. This year, our own Marketing Director, Jenna Weinerman, joined Move for Hunger’s Board of Directors, having been a friend to the cause for years. And in September, we teamed up with Move for Hunger as our charitable partner for the 2016 Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Race. In just a few short weeks, we raised $5,000 for Move for Hunger!

To date, Move for Hunger has collected over 7 million pounds of food and fed more than 6 million people through regular collections and food drives. They’ve held over 600 food drives in 2016 alone — a big jump from last year. And still, nearly 50 million Americans are without enough food. Will you help in the fight against hunger?
