Meet Updater: Whitney Meer, Success Manager
Meet Whitney, everyone! Originally an Updater intern, Whitney joined Updater full-time as a member of our Client Success team. Read on to learn more about Whitney, including her best piece of moving advice, as well as what lovable animal she's most terrified of.
Do you have any moving horror stories?
This year I moved during NYC's historic blizzard. Thankfully I was using a full service moving company, but it was snowing so hard that each box got about an inch and a half of snow on it between the truck and the building! We had to brush snow off the boxes in the entryway of my apartment before we brought them inside.
What's your best piece of moving advice?
Know exactly where your bedding is, and make your bed first thing when you move in. You'll be so happy knowing that no matter what state of unpacking you get to, you'll be able to fall into bed at the end of a long day.
What are two random/personal tidbits about you?
I sing Alto in the Brooklyn Community Chorus, and I'm terrified of elephants.
What's the largest item you've ever had to carry on the subway?
I picked up a 5x8 rug from a FedEx location and carried it (by myself!) two stops on the train and up some stairs once.
How many times have you moved?
Eight times in the last five years! (In an out of dorms and among apartments.)
You're about to move. What would you make sure to never do again?
I would never move in January! The weather is too unpredictable, and I almost gave myself a hernia from the stress.
What's your favorite part about working for Updater?
The dogs! But seriously, working on a team with people who are excited and engaged with what they're doing.
What's your favorite Updater feature? Why?
My favorite Updater feature is definitely Preferred Providers. It's a great tool for everyone involved in the multifamily space. Promoting partnerships is awesome for the revenue share opportunities, but I really love working with Property Managers to help them help their residents by personalizing Updater as much as possible for their site.
If you wrote a personal memoir, what would it's title be?
Where Did This Glitter Come From? The Whitney Meer Story
In a Tweet (140 characters or less), describe the office culture at Updater.
Hardworking, fun, excited people doing amazing things every day. Also, puppies.
How did you come to work at Updater?
I started as an intern here at Updater on the marketing team right after college, and quickly fell in love with Client Success and what our team can do for the Multifamily space. So, I stuck around!
What's the best part about working on a small team?
Being able to really observe and learn from one another on a daily basis. I'm constantly picking up tips and tricks from the other members of my team – they're total rockstars, and they inspire me.
What motivates you to come to work everyday?
There are a lot of moving parts involved in an Updater rollout, and I love the challenge. The rush of watching the first batch of Updater invites go out is a pretty great feeling. The snacks don't hurt either.
What's the craziest thing you've seen someone do in NYC?
At my old job as a barista we had a regular who came in with his cat sitting on his head.
Whom do you admire most as a business leader?
Jen Dziura of GetBullish.com is my business fairy godmother. I've learned so much from her articles and I credit her with a lot of my attitudes about work and ambition.
What's your favorite quote?
"I could very calmly go wild" - Annie Dillard. It's from a piece called Living With Weasels that's about finding passion and holding on to it no matter where it takes you.
What's the first website/app you check in the morning?
My email! I try to wake up by reading my horoscope (I know, I know) and then the "What You Should Know" section of the New York Times.
It's the apocalypse. Where do you hide?
I'd hightail it to Colorado! Fewer people, fewer resources to fight over.
You have a time machine, but you can only make one trip. Where do you go?
The future! Really excited about intergalactic space travel, all metallic spandex outfits, and flying cars.
What song best describes how you work?
"Work Bitch" by Britney Spears.
What do you do to unwind?
I love to swim, and I'm trying to get myself into yoga. I also love to read, but by far my favorite unwinding activity is going to choir practice on Wednesday nights.
If you could travel to work everyday on a vehicle without wheels (think: hovercraft, broom), what would you choose?
What's your favorite fast food restaurant?
Taco Bell, definitely. My mom tells me that she ate it a lot when she was pregnant with me (thanks mom), but now I crave it when I'm sick, weirdly.
What are four things you can't live without?
Paper and pen (for drawing, writing, playing hangman when I'm bored at restaurants), black tea (hot or cold), a good book and sunscreen.
