Meet Updater: Sam Burkley, Success Manager

Everyone, say “hi” to Sam, our new Success Manager! Read on to learn a few fun facts about Sam, including her all-time favorite Saturday Night Live Skit and the best part about working with the Updater team.

What do you do at Updater?
I’m a Success Manager here at Updater, where it’s my job to ensure that our multifamily clients have a long and happy journey on Updater (making them smile is a plus, too!). While I’ve spent the past few years of my career working in account management for other SaaS companies, my previous life was spent traveling the world as a dancer for Royal Caribbean!

Do you have a moving horror story?
’Course I do! When I worked for Royal Caribbean, I had to somehow fit 8 months of my life into two medium size suitcases. I then had to fit all of those belongings into a tiny cabin that I shared with another person (not exactly ideal, I know!). Needless to say, there was a lot of frustration and re-arranging involved to make that setup work… but I managed! I like to think of it as an exercise in minimalism.

Where did you grow up?
Tampa, Florida

What are two random/personal tidbits about you?
I live in the city, but I'm secretly a country girl at heart. I grew up on 10 acres with cows and turkeys in the front yard, and my neighbors had horses. I'll always love the outdoors and good ol' southern music. Also, I'm an extremely adventurous eater – I’ll try anything once!

What's the largest item you've ever had to carry on the subway?
My roomie’s dog, Raven. She's half Shar Pei, half Pug and let me tell you, she's a HUSKY girl. We snuck her on the subway (pets technically aren't allowed), but she kept her cool the entire trip. Hey, it was only 3 stops!

What's your favorite part about working at Updater?
Catered Friday lunches! Joking – the Friday lunches are a major plus, but I'd have to say the team is my favorite part. Not only is everyone friendly, fun, passionate and truly talented at what they do, but we're all working toward the same company goal of making the moving process that much easier to swallow.

What's your favorite feature on Updater?
I personally love the “Move-In Offers” feature. There are a ton of awesome discounts that I wish I could've taken advantage last time that I moved. One of my favorite offers is One Kings Lane, where I actually bought a few special pieces for my current apartment.

Whom do you admire most as a business leader?
My sister, Amanda, who's the epitome of a #GIRLBOSS. She owns two businesses in Tampa and just had a baby. She's always managed to succeed professionally, while mentoring others and juggling a million things in her personal life (motherhood included). I’m constantly learning from her.

What's your favorite quote?
Because I couldn’t keep it to just one…

“Always keep your eyes open. Keep watching. Because whatever you see can inspire you." – Grace Coddington

“A day without laughter is a day wasted." – Charlie Chaplin

What's the first website/app you check in the morning?
The Daily Skimm. My morning commute depends on it.

What song best describes how you work?
"Girl on Fire" by Alicia Keys.

What are four things you can't live without?
My family & friends, cheese, barre classes, and coffee!

What's your favorite Saturday Night Live skit?
Stefan, a character played by Bill Hader, for sure! Stefan appears as the "New York City" correspondent for Weekend Update with Seth Meyers as a guide who knows all about New York. He usually recommends unusual clubs and parties with bizarre characters, but the hands down best part of the skit is Hader breaking character and laughing. Apparently, the writers would add in or change the original content, and it would throw him off guard. I've never LOL'd so much in my entire life!
