Meet Updater: Greg Hicks, Director of Sales and Business Development

We sat down with Greg Hicks, our Director of Sales and Business Development, to learn more about his journey at Updater, his favorite Updater memory, and his best piece of moving advice.

What do you do at Updater?

I work in Sales and Business Development in our Property Management and Real Estate channels.

How long have you been working at Updater?

11 months. I started in September 2014.

If you wrote a personal memoir, what would its title be?

Big Guys Hate Moving

Do you have a moving horror story?

Aren't all moves considered horror stories? I’m a big guy, and I own a truck. People ask me to help them move all the time. They think that big guys like to pick up big heavy things like refrigerators and couches. Not my idea of a good time. I have a hard time saying no, but not responding to a text is very easy. So, if you want me to help you move, an old fashioned phone call will usually do the trick.

What's your best piece of moving advice?

Plan early. I had an old coach that said, “Poor planning equals poor performance." So, it’s best to map out your move well in advance.

What's your favorite Updater memory?

We have so many great stories from traveling to events together. I swear – I would have a very popular reality TV show just about the events and trade shows we attend. We could call it Trade Show Season with the Team @ Updater. It would be an instant hit – I should pitch my idea to A&E, Bravo, or Discovery.

In your opinion, what's Updater's largest contribution to the moving industry?

I love it when I’m on a demo and someone says, "I wish I could have used Updater last time I moved." Not only is it our slogan that we display proudly on our T-shirts, but it reinforces what we’re accomplishing on a daily basis.

How many times have you moved?

Not sure. I can tell you that my family once moved across the street when I was in elementary school. Yep, we literally rolled that refrigerator on a dolly across the cul-de-sac. So memorable.

Describe your ideal moving experience.

I hire gentle, big guys to complete my move. I don't do a thing.

What's your favorite part about working at Updater?

The people and product. People are very hard working and have fun at the same time. The product is just ridiculously cool, and it’s actually changing the way Americans move.

What's your favorite Updater feature? Why?

Updating your accounts and subscriptions. Literally, all you have to do is tell us which businesses and organizations you want to be updated, and we do the rest. Reminds me of that old infomercial that says, "Set it, and forget it."

What's the best part about working on a small team?

We move fast and can pivot even faster. Working on big teams is similar to working on a large cargo ship. It takes a lot of people and tug boats to get that ship to turn. That’s not the case at Updater. We’re like a ski boat that can turn on a dime. Very fun.

It's the apocalypse. Where do you hide?

I live in Idaho. In short, I live where people come to hide during the apocalypse. We got all sorts of survivalists out here. Don't call them crazy… call them well-prepared.

Whom do you admire most as a business leader?

Gary Vaynerchuk and Dave Ramsey.

What's the first website/app you check in the morning?

GMAIL. It’s like Christmas every morning. Some are great, some are bad, and some you wish you wouldn't have received.

You have a time machine, but you can only make one trip. Where do you go?

November 5, 1955. Enchantment of the Sea Dance. I convince Marty McFly to give me a ride home back to present day 2015. (This is a Back to Future reference BTW).

What's your favorite fast food restaurant?

Chik-Fil-A. Love it.

What are four things you can't live without?

1. Faith 2. Family 3. Football 4. Food

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Kirkland, Washington just outside Seattle.
